Yamaha has a long tradition of producing excellent audio equipment but it has never seemed mainstream. It’s a brand that’s always appeared to be on one side of the mainstream market despite making some genuine classics over the year. The latest audio product from Yamaha looks like it could be a modern classic because of the company’s extraordinary passion for producing its new Yamaha YH-5000SE headphones.

Yamaha says that its new YH-5000SE headphones are built to exceed the most demanding music lover’s expectations, delivering the ultimate True Sound experience by immersing the listener in an authentic, nuanced, high-quality sound. The headphones have been in development for six years and the designers have drawn their inspiration and engineering know-how from legendary Yamaha Orthodynamic headphones that first appeared back in the 1970s.

Every aspect of the new headphones has been completely reimagined using the latest manufacturing technologies and engineering methods. Yamaha says the utmost care has been applied to the manufacturing process with the headphones built at the same factory in Kakegawa, Japan, that produces Yamaha’s flagship grand pianos and other premium audio products.

According to Alex Sadeghian, director of consumer audio, Yamaha Corporation of America: “The YH-5000SE is a testament to the creativity, excellence and workmanship that Yamaha stands for. It serves as a reminder of our capabilities in the world of headphones. With this one, we’re going to stir things up since a new legend has been born.”

The YH-5000SE headphones are designed and built around the principles of True Sound, encompassing tonal balance, dynamics and sound image. Yamaha claims the headphones ensure faithful reproduction over the entire sonic spectrum, including all musical instruments and vocals, at all pitches and frequencies. That’s quite a bold claim. The company says the YH-5000SE can accurately reproduce detailed breathy vocals and subtle performance nuances. Energetic dynamism comes through without distortion, and the spatial expression fully conveys every space as intended – from a cozy nightclub to the enthusiasm of a packed concert venue.

The highlights of the Yamaha YH-5000SE include orthodynamic drivers that have been reimagined using the latest technology, including a thin and ultra-lightweight diaphragm that can achieve dynamic contrast between stillness and motion. The headphones also accurately track minute sonic changes and reproduce bass frequencies with rich volume and transparency.

With its open-back design, the large-capacity earcups have plenty of internal acoustic volume that helps the operation of the ultra-thin film diaphragm. Yamaha claims that this creates a perfect airflow to prevent sound reflections inside the rear cavity of the earcups and eliminates unwanted resonance at the back of the diaphragm. To control the internal air pressure, Yamaha has used a newly developed, Japanese-made, rolled plain Dutch weave stainless steel filter in the housing.

To ensure a comfortable fit, Yamaha has used a double-layer headband that evenly distributes the load on the head and optimizes lateral pressure. A stepless slider makes fine adjustments and the correct fit possible. In addition, an inclined swivel mechanism stabilizes the earpad surface pressure by tilting the rotation axis of the swivel. Thanks to their magnesium housings, the headphones weigh 320g ounces, making the YH-5000SE one of the world’s lightest, high-end headphones.

Each YH-5000SE comes with a full range of accessories, including a dedicated headphone stand machined from solid aluminum, two different cable systems for balanced and unbalanced driver sources, and two different earpads: sheepskin leather and synthetic suede.

Pricing & Availability: The Yamaha YH-5000SE will be available from early 2023 and priced at $4,999.95 / £4,799.
