Last year, RØDE released its first pair of reference headphones: the NTH-100. The headphones went on to win many awards and were greeted with widespread acclaim amongst audio professionals. The NTH-100 look set to become a modern audio classic thanks to growing popularity with podcasters and live streamers.

Now RØDE has announced the NTH-100M headset. Based on the NTH-100 headphones, this brand-new product incorporates a detachable broadcast-grade microphone that’s ideal for broadcasting, podcasting, streaming, video meetings or any other applications that call for a high-quality headset. And for those people who have already bought a pair of NTH-100 headphones, the NTH-Mic is available as a separate accessory so NTH-100 owners can turn their headphones into a professional broadcast headset.

The NTH-100M headset uses the same custom-matched dynamic drivers as the NTH-100 headphones. These 40mm drivers are manufactured with high-grade components to produce an accurate frequency response with low distortion levels. The broadcast-grade condenser microphone can capture all the nuance and detail in a person’s voice.

The NTH-100M’s earcups are covered with superbly soft Alcantara, a unique material that’s highly breathable. The earcups are stuffed with memory foam and incorporate a layer of CoolTech gel that absorbs and dissipates heat. This feature helps to cool the wearer’s head and ears, which reduces wearing fatigue and is invaluable for broadcasting and live streaming for extended periods.

The construction of the NTH-100M headset is fully adjustable with a steel-sprung headband that uses RØDE’s FitLok system that maintains the size for a tailored fit. The construction is rugged and hard-wearing and is designed for long service life. The NTH-100M are made with high-grade materials and assembled at RØDE’s factory in Sydney, Australia

The sound produced by the NTH-100’s drivers is open and natural, making them suitable for various uses, including critical listening or enjoying great music. The broadcast-grade microphone uses a miniature condenser capsule to capture all the details of a user’s voice and is positioned at the optimum distance for rejecting plosives and keeps the volume constant no matter how much the user moves their head.

Thanks to a locking bayonet connector, the mic is fully detachable when not in use. The pads and cable of the NTH-100M are all user-replaceable, ensuring the headset will deliver a long and useful life. Finally, the NTH-100 headphones have a lifetime warranty (a world-first for professional headphones), while a 2-year warranty covers the NTH-Mic.

Verdict: I reviewed the RØDE NTH-100 headphones for Forbes in March and was impressed with their overall performance. Now RØDE has added a broadcast-quality boom microphone that’s ideal for podcasting, live streaming and gaming. The NTH-100M is the perfect headset for live work and keeps the mic at the ideal distance from the speaker’s mouth. When the microphone isn’t needed, it can quickly be taken off so the user can listen to music comfortably. One accessory I’d like to see with the NTH-100M is the option of a cable that terminates in an XLR plug with a plug-in power transformer for the mic and a 6.35mm TRS jack so that the headset can connect with a USB audio interface or an ISDN terminal. Highly Recommended.

Pricing & Availability: The RØDE NTH-100M headset is available now and costs $189. The NTH-Mic is also available on its own for $59.99.
