Last month, Plugable launched a docking station supporting up to three external screens. Now, the computer accessory company has gone a step further with the launch of a simple and affordable video adapter for extending laptop displays to four screens, even on M1 and M2 MacBooks that would otherwise only support a single external monitor.
Plugable’s new USB-C or USB 3.0 Quad HDMI Adapter (USBC-768H4) can handle four extended HDMI screens through a single USB-C or USB 3.0 port and provides support for resolutions up to 1,920 x 1,080 with a 60Hz refresh rate.
The Plugable Quad HDMI Adapter has a six-inch flat and flexible cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter. Both items stow neatly away in the bottom of the device for easy transport and storage, making it ideal for portable use or hybrid working.
Requiring just a single USB-C or USB-A port, the unit draws all its power from the host computer. And despite being small enough to fit into a pocket, the Quad HDMI Adapter can still deliver video signals across four screens. Thanks to a Silicon Motion chipset with two HDMI ports on each side of the adapter.
The Quad HDMI Adapter works with almost any computer running Windows 10 (or later) and macOS 11 (or later). That includes Macs with Apple’s M1 or M2 silicon that would otherwise only support a single external monitor. The graphics adapter requires a driver download. The driver is installed automatically with Windows machines, although users can also install it manually for better results. The device requires the InstantView app to manage the extra monitors when used on a Mac.
