Lenovo Group, the world’s No. 2 supplier of PCs of tablet computers in the first quarter of 2022, has named HTC Corp. Chairwoman Cher Wang to its board as an independent director, according to a Lenovo filing today.
Wang, 63, co-founded Taiwan-headquartered HTC with her husband Wenchi Chen in 1997. HTC was one of the world’s largest suppliers of handsets and the duo were one of the world’s wealthiest couples in 2011 with a fortune estimated by Forbes at $8.8 billion.
HTC later ran into tough competition from Apple and others, though remains a supplier of computer vision technology and computing platforms. Wang is also the chairwoman of electronics supplier VIA Technologies.
The influential businesswoman is the daughter of deceased Taiwan business icon Y.C. Wang and sits on the board of family-controlled Formosa Plastics, one of Taiwan’s largest plastics manufacturers.
Lenovo today also announced that Xue Lan would join its board. Xue is currently a professor at Tsinghua University, the dean of Schwarzman College and the dean of Institute for AI International Governance at Tsinghua University.
Xue is also an independent non-executive director of SenseTime Group and Neusoft Corporation.
For the financial year ended March 31, 2022, China-headquartered Lenovo paid non-executive directors $340,000 annually, consisting of $100,000 in cash plus and equity rights worth $240,000.

Lenovo sold 21 million PCs and tablets in the first quarter, second only to Apple’s 22.3 million, though down 12% from a year earlier, according to research firm Canalys. HP ranked No. 3 with 15.9 million.
