It hardly seems any time at all since I last reported on Record Store Day, the one day in the year when we celebrate the existence of stores selling all forms of music. Streaming music is convenient but there’s nothing quite like owning and buying music on physical media. It’s also a great way of supporting musicians.
Now British audio brand Cambridge Audio has announced a brand-new turntable just in time to play some of that vinyl you’re going to be buying on Record Store Day. The new Alva ST extends Cambridge Audio’s portfolio of turntables to reach a whole new generation of vinyl lovers. The Alva ST can connect to traditional hi-fi systems or be used to stream vinyl wirelessly to Bluetooth headphones, speakers or even Bluetooth-enabled amplifiers.
The belt-driven Bluetooth turntable will be available in time for Record Store Day’s second drop on Saturday 18th June. Designed and engineered at Cambridge Audio’s London HQ, the Alva ST is timelessly stylish.
Alva ST has been designed for vinyl lovers who want to listen to records at the best possible audio quality but without any of the fuss or complexity associated with old-school turntables. It comes with all the essential components already fitted, enabling the user to start playing vinyl in minutes – either via a traditional hi-fi system or by wirelessly streaming in high-quality Bluetooth aptX HD.
The new model builds on the success of Cambridge Audio’s highly acclaimed and innovative Alva TT – the world’s first aptX HD Bluetooth turntable. The new Alva ST now brings this functionalist at a more affordable price point
Stuart George is the managing director of Cambridge Audio and he says: “The original Alva TT was the world’s first aptX HD Bluetooth turntable, and the reaction to it was beyond all our expectations. In response to customer feedback, we are pleased to offer more choice and flexibility by introducing the Alva ST alongside TT V2. Whether you’re just getting started with the vinyl revival or looking to upgrade your first record player for a step up in performance, the Cambridge Audio Alva ST is there for you to enjoy your growing vinyl collection.”
The Alva ST features Bluetooth aptX HD for wireless streaming to amplifiers, headphones and speakers. This means the turntable can be placed anywhere in your room without worrying about wires and yet it will stream music at 24-bit/48kHz. The belt-drive system has electronic speed control enabling users to switch easily between playing albums and singles.
There’s also a new high mass and low-resonance tonearm designed to keep resonance to a minimum. For those who have newer amplifiers without a phono stage, the Alva AT has a built-in phono preamp based on Cambridge Audio’s Alva Duo phono stage so there’s no need for extra boxes and wires.
To ensure the Alva ST works straight out of the box, Cambridge Audio has pre-installed an Audio-Technica moving magnet cartridge. The platter is made from diecast aluminum which has been CNC milled to ensure a level and smooth surface. The platter is finished with a rubber mat to reduce unwanted vibrations.
Pricing & Availability: The Cambridge Audio Alva ST is available from June 15 with a suggested UK retail price of £849, from Richer Sounds stores and at cambridgeaudio.com. In the US, the Alva ST is available priced at $999 from selected retailers across North America and at cambridgeaudio.com.
