Audio-Technica’s M50x studio monitor headphones have been the go-to choice for many musicians and broadcasters for quite a few years. Their superb build quality and flat frequency response make them something approaching a gold standard for studio use.
Now the Japan-based company has released a more affordable pair of studio-quality headphones with Bluetooth and wired operation. The ATH-M20xBT are most definitely inspired by the brand’s best-selling M Series of wired professional studio headphones, but this new model offers up to 60 hours of continuous wireless playback and a sound that’s big and bold.
The critically acclaimed M Series range is renowned for accurate audio and excellent comfort levels, ideal for extended sessions in the studio and on the go. The ATH-M20xBT are also a wonderfully comfortable pair of headphones. The build quality isn’t quite as solid at the M50xBT and there are no hinged earcups. However, these earphones look great and feel incredibly light to wear.
With their modern design and high-quality materials, including professional-quality earpads, the ATH-M20xBT are fitted with 40mm drivers made with rare earth magnets and copper-clad aluminum wire voice coils for exceptional clarity and a whopping bass response. The ATH-M20xBT are certainly more bass-heavy than the neutral ATH-M50xBT. The Bluetooth has a low-latency mode for accurate synchronization between audio and video when streaming movies or playing games.
These new headphones also have a multipoint pairing capability that enables the user to connect two devices over Bluetooth. One device could be a smartphone for taking calls, while the other could be for connecting to a tablet for watching a movie or playing a game. Switching between the two devices is seamless. Along with up to 60 hours of playtime on a full charge, a quick burst charge of just 10 minutes will yield up to 3 hours of playtime. The headphones are easy to use and have a microphone built-in for phone calls and voice assistants, as well as buttons on the left earcup for handling calls, controlling music playback, plus adjusting volume levels.
The sound quality served up by the M20xBT is solid and muscular. As well as being excellent for playing a wide selection of musical genres, these headphones make for affordable studio cans for broadcasting or podcasting, thanks to their closed-back design and effective sound isolation.
Verdict: If you’re looking for a high-quality pair of Bluetooth wireless headphones that fit over the ears, the ATH-M20xBT are a bargain. The fit is incredibly comfortable and the weight is wonderfully low, ideal for long listening sessions. The battery life is nothing short of epic and should you run out of power, there’s an audio cable supplied with a 3.5mm stereo jack plug for passive use. If you love plenty of bass and enjoy a detailed top end with an ideal V-shaped frequency response, these headphones are well worth an audition.
